Budget vs Premium Tyres: Is It Worth Paying More?

🛡️

Safety

Premium tyres stop up to 10 metres shorter in wet conditions. In emergency braking at 100km/h, that's the difference between stopping safely or a collision.

⏱️

Longevity

Premium tyres typically last 50,000-80,000km vs 30,000-50,000km for budget tyres. The cost-per-km often works out similar.

⛽

Fuel Efficiency

Low rolling resistance tyres can improve fuel economy by 5-7%. Over 50,000km, that could save $500+ in fuel.

🔇

Comfort

Premium tyres are quieter and provide better road feedback. If you do lots of highway driving, this makes a real difference.

Our Recommendation

For most NZ drivers, mid-range tyres (Kumho, Hankook, Falken) offer the best balance of performance, safety, and value. Save budget tyres for older vehicles or second cars. Invest in premium for performance cars or if you do lots of wet weather driving.

How Can I Save Money on Tyres?

  • ✓Buy in pairs or sets of 4 - Many shops offer discounts for multiple tyres
  • ✓Shop around - Prices vary 20-30% between retailers for the same tyre
  • ✓Consider online retailers - Often cheaper, then pay a shop to fit them
  • ✓Maintain correct pressure - Underinflation causes rapid wear
  • ✓Regular rotation - Every 10,000km extends tyre life evenly
  • ✓Fix alignment issues - Poor alignment destroys tyres prematurely

What Do Tyres Need to Pass a WOF?

For WOF, tyres must have:

  • • Minimum 1.5mm tread depth across the full width
  • • No cuts, bulges, or exposed cords
  • • Same type tyres on each axle (don't mix radial and cross-ply)
  • • Correct load and speed rating for the vehicle
  • • No repairs on the sidewall

Tip: The wear indicators (small bars in the tread grooves) show when you're at 1.5mm. If the tread is level with these bars, it's time to replace.
